What’s new in the new version and its release date
We’re almost there!
Our Hero! First has been thoroughly tested by our beta testers and, after some final polishing, it’s ready to launch on Steam, itch.io, and GameJolt!
A huge thank-you goes out to:
- D4rw1ll
- Soraku
- Simone Trapassi
- Zoro the Gallade
- Carlo Mercadante
for playing through every corner of this new version and reporting every little detail. Your help was invaluable.
The release is set for
May 31, 2026
There’s just one thing left to do: the new game trailer. I’ve been working on it carefully over the past few days alongside Martin, because I want it to live up to everything else.
Steam Achievements
The Steam version of the game will support Steam Achievements, 25 in total, all waiting to be unlocked. Whether you’re a completionist or a casual player, there’s something here for you!
Native Builds & Steam Deck Support
Windows, Linux, or Steam Deck? Doesn’t matter. Our Hero! First will run natively on all three platforms, with full Steam Deck support, ready to earn the official Verified badge. PC controllers are also recognized automatically, no extra configuration needed.
High Resolution
The game will run in high resolution, fullscreen, making use of every pixel on your display. Not a given for a title built with RPG Maker VX, but we made it happen (thanks to mkxp-z!)
Visual Improvements
As detailed in the previous devlog , the game received a comprehensive visual overhaul: new character sprites, new animations, lighting, shadows, redesigned HUDs, more readable message fonts, a new logo, and new illustrations. It will feel like an almost entirely different game, and that’s not even everything!
New Mechanics & Improved Gameplay
A number of small changes that make the experience feel smoother and more satisfying:
- you can now dash at any time simply by running (previously only possible during battles, by pressing a specific button)
- added a quick-swap shortcut to toggle between the current weapon and the previously equipped one
- special sword abilities are now assigned automatically (previously required manual selection from the menu)
- increased player movement speed
- rebalanced stats for swords, abilities, enemies, and bosses
- improved game menu: it now displays the current map name and lets you visit the Trophy Hall directly
- and much more****!****
Drastically Improved Performance
This might be the most impressive change of all. Maps that previously ran at 5-6 FPS now run at a locked 60 FPS, with no drops whatsoever. See the before-and-after below, it speaks for itself:
German Localization
German is now officially supported! Our Hero! First can be played in five languages: Italian, English, Spanish, French, and German. A special thank-you to D4rw1ll, who proofread the German localization and streamed the entire game during beta testing, you can find the VOD on his YouTube channel: Part 1 · Part 2
That’s all for now!
I hope Our Hero! First gives you a few hours of pure fun (it runs about 3 hours long) just as much as I enjoyed working on these improvements over the past three months. Which of these changes are you most excited about? Let me know in the comments!
